10/28 Little Black Book

Little Black Book

Women: In what seems to be a perfect relationship? Are you interested in comparing yourself to all of your man’s previous and potential partners? Reading his little black book is for you!

Little Black book, a term that comes off as innocent and insignificant, yet has the power to drive women into insanity.

A little black book is an address book, especially one kept by a man, with the names of women companions considered available for dating (Collinsdictionary1).

The idea of this concept doesn’t seem so bad, right?

In the 2004 film, “Little Black Book”, Brittany Murphy shows viewers otherwise.

In the film, Brittany Murphy snoops through her boyfriend’s palm pilot and finds a list of all his previous lovers. This list of women created an outrage in the film. Women are notorious for comparing themselves to one another, especially to their boyfriend’s exes, and for being jealous of the other previous women. Instances such as these play a vital role in the film, eventually leading to the breakup of Murphy and her boyfriend.

Why give something so small so much power?

Is it due to the fact that when the term is searched on Urban Dictionary, these 20 synonyms appear?

Booty call – holodex – slut – sorostitute – pussy – sex – drunk dial – ho – hook up – horny – phone book – playlist – rolodex – romparoom – skank – skank bank – whore – whorority

These are 20 terms every woman wants to read when involving her boyfriend’s ex and potential lovers, right?

It’s no wonder women tend to act as if they are lionesses in the African Safari fighting to the death over a wildebeest carcass when it comes to men.

With the technology that society thrives off of, little black books seem to be mostly electronically based today. Apps such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook seem to assist those in the process of creating “lists” of potential lovers.  According to the Atlantic.com, today the term “Backburner Relationships” is taking place of the Little Black Book. This term describes not only men, but women as well putting people on a “backburner” for future relationships. To do so, the man/woman subtly keeps this potential partner in their life with minimal communication or interaction so that the situation comes off as harmless. A simple action such as “liking” or commenting on a backburner’s Facebook status could be suffice.

Are men not aware that women seem to have the ability to find out everything, including what they did seven years ago on June 2nd at 3:27 pm? Perhaps keeping this said list of women in your head would be best for all parties involved. Although to a man this metaphorical list may seem harmless if he is staying faithful to his girlfriend, the majority of women will place an unnecessary sense of doubt and mistrust in their head.
