One Red Thread by Blind Pilot

Oh from the first that the line got drawn
It was poison in the land it was on
One red thread through the middle of a song
My only one, my only one
I can't remember the age that I was
But not that story that pumped in my blood
When you were the savior
And I was the taker of
Oh where I was
Oh but man oh man you can do what you want
Oh man oh man you can do what you want
The only line that is true is the line you're from
I have to say there was a mile or two
I had the itch to fly and I flew
Now at best we would make our dreams
With something used
With something used
And from the minute that the line got drawn
I couldn't see straight to you for nothing
Now me, I'm the poison in one
Yeah I'm the one
I am the...
Oh but man oh man you can do what you want
Oh man oh man you can do what you want
The only line that is true is the line that you're...
Oh man oh man you can do what you want
Oh man oh man you can do what you want
The only line that is true is the line you're from
The only line that is true is the line you're from

The Red Thread of Destiny- “An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless or time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break.” While finding the definition of this term, I automatically assumed that the song was about two lovers that were destined to be together. As I dug deeper into analyzing the song, I quickly realized that is not the case, not in my eyes at least. After interpreting each line of lyrics, and putting them into my own words, I quickly realized one thing: destiny is bullshit. I began to think of all the people who spend their entire lives abiding by this mythical “red thread”. I honestly sympathize for those people. Think about all of the experiences, people, and things they have missed out on just because of some concept some random guy made up back in old Eastern Asia. “Oh man oh man you can do what you want”, is sung multiple times throughout the song, and it is 30452% true. Only you are in control of your life, your happiness. So do whatever the hell it is that makes you happy. Who cares what anyone else wants or thinks?

The song discusses a relationship where two people are seemed to be brought together by this Red Thread belief. The woman in the song meets the man at a crucial time in his life. He was having personal struggles, and she helped him overcome this. She was placed in his life for a reason at that time, causing the two to think they were destined to be together. As we all know, life is unpredictable. It will throw you curve balls when you least expect it. Shit happens. Although you may be madly in love with someone, and are “destined to be together,” you never know what will happen in life, which is the beauty of it. The lyrics “The only line that is true is the line you’re from,” really hit home for me. The only person you can trust is yourself. A sad realization, yet a very accurate one. You are the only one who knows what is truly best for you. As the song proceeds, he begins to see who she really is for the first time. “I couldn’t see straight to you for nothing.” He was so numb, so blind that he was not capable of actually seeing her for who she is. The two used each other in a sense for their own personal benefit and labeled it love by destiny. He used her for self-improvement, and she took advantage of his vulnerability to get close to him. This song is an accurate depiction of the fact that everything happens for a reason, and we have to trust in that. It’s not destiny that will get you where you need to be in life, but yourself, your experiences, and your own decisions.

  1. Gangster piece, sister. Strong textual evidence. Do what you want and keep it 100.
